4th July 2009: To date, six calling Corncrakes have been confirmed in the county, more than in any year since before the annual census started in West Connacht, in 1994. It’s possible a seventh Corncrake could yet be confirmed. Ciarán Davis at Rosses Point reports hearing three on Oyster Island, two nights after his sister heard two on Coney. If anyone can give a precise location for all these birds heard on the same night, we will know for sure we have seven (with two others already confirmed elsewhere in Sligo Bay).
A survey of the coast between Enniscrone and Aughrus Head failed to turn up any birds at the end of June, and no reports have been received from anywhere else in the county, as yet. The national census of Corncrakes ends July 10. If you want to hear one don't delay, as most Corncrakes stop calling by mid-July.
